Walk-In Shower vs. Tub: What San Jose Homes Need

Tub-to-shower conversions are one of the most requested bathroom projects in San Jose right now. Before you pull the tub, there are three things worth thinking through: how you actually use the room, resale, and what the space physically allows.

The common advice is 'never remove your only tub.' The more useful version: keep at least one bathtub somewhere in the house if the home has three or more bedrooms. Families with small children do filter listings that way. If you're converting a primary bath and the hall bath still has a tub, you're fine.

For a standard 5-foot alcove in a San Jose home:

• Curbless / zero-threshold shower: $14,000 – $26,000 (requires subfloor recessing)
• New freestanding soaking tub with separate shower: $22,000 – $45,000 (needs the square footage)

California code requires a minimum 1,024 sq in shower floor area with a 30-inch circle able to fit inside, and 24 inches of clear space in front of the opening. Many older San Jose bathrooms are tight enough that a glass enclosure and door swing become the real constraint, not the plumbing.

If you plan to stay in the home long-term, a curbless shower with blocking behind the tile for future grab bars is one of the highest-value decisions you can make. Adding blocking during the remodel costs almost nothing; adding it later means opening walls.

Full waterproofing behind the tile, a properly sloped pan, a linear drain if you go curbless, and an exhaust fan sized for the room. Those four things matter more to the 10-year outcome than which tile you pick.
