Almost every kitchen remodel client asks for an island. Whether one fits — and whether it makes the kitchen better or worse — comes down to a few measurements most Pinterest boards skip.

Walkways around an island need 42 inches minimum, and 48 inches if two people cook at once or an appliance door opens into the aisle. Add the island width (36 inches minimum to be genuinely useful) and you need roughly 13 feet of kitchen width before an island is comfortable. Under that, a peninsula is the better answer.

Budget 24 inches of counter width per seat and 15 inches of knee depth for counter-height seating (18 inches at bar height). Squeezing four stools into a space designed for three is the fastest way to make a beautiful island annoying to use.

Putting the sink in the island keeps the cook facing the room and is the most popular choice. A cooktop in the island requires ventilation — a ceiling hood is more effective than a downdraft but changes the visual center of the kitchen. Leaving the island clear gives you the most usable prep surface, which is what many households actually need.
